Clinical pharmacogenetic testing & application
Overview:
The patient's response to therapeutic drugs can be various although the degree of variation is different based on characteristics of individual drugs. The pharmacogenetics is the study of inherited genetic differences in drug metabolic pathways which can affect individual responses to drugs, both in terms of therapeutic effect as well as adverse effects. This pharmacogenetic information enable the personalized treatment by predicting the patient's drug response. In this section, we will provide useful information about clinical application of pharmacogenetic testing, interpretation, and reporting of the results.

Symposium 16
Patient blood management (PBM)
Overview:
Patient blood management (PBM) aims to optimise, conserve and manage the patient’s own blood requirements thereby minimising or avoiding exposure to allogeneic blood and risks of adverse transfusion reactions. PBM means changing from a product focus to a patient focus and requires a patient specific multidisciplinary team approach in optimising safe, quality care of patients who may need a transfusion thus resulting in improved patient outcomes. In this session, the concept of PBM and its current status in Japan and Europe along with the role of transfusion medicine specialists in PBM will be discussed.
